A simple fix for the 'too many files open' limitation of Mac OS is to use the 'ulimit - n' command. Curiously, the value of n appears to be critical to whether or not this command is accepted by MacOS.

I've found that ulimit -n 10240 (the default is 256) works but n values higher do not. 10240 files is probably more that enough for most users.

This is a much simpler fix than many others I've found via Google. Does anyone know whether 10240 is the actual limit, and, if so, why? I also wonder whether the complex alternatives solutions to ulimit were developed because the user simply chose a value that wasn't accepted by MacOS and gave up on ulimit thinking it was a Linux command that doesn't work on MacOS.

Adding the 'ulimit -n 10240' statement to your bash profile using sudo nano .bash_profile makes it permanent.

To Find your MAC or IP address follow the instructions for your operating system:

Windows

1. Click on: Start
2. Select: Run
3. In the box type: cmd
4. In the command prompt box type: ipconifg /all
5. A lists of all interfaces will appear:
   • Find: 'Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection'
     • Look for Physical Address or MAC address or Hard Address (ex: 00-12-AB-34-CD-56)
     • Look for IP Address (ex 137.99.123.45)
     • Look for Subnet Mask (ex 255.255.255.0)
     • Look for Default Gateway (ex 137.99.123.1)

For Mac (10.4)

1. Click on: Apple Icon
2. Go to: System Preferences
3. Click on: Network
4. In the 'Show' Pull down: Select your adapter (usually Built-in Ethernet or AirPort)
   1. For Mac address:
      • Go to Ethernet or Airport (same as adapter setting from pull down)
      • Look for MAC address (ex: 00:12:AB:34:CD:56)
   2. For IP Address:
      • Go to: TCP/IP
      • Look for IP Address (137.99.123.45)
      • Look for Subnet Mask (255.255.255.0)
      • Look for Router (137.99.123.1)

Linux

1. Open the command shell
2. Type: /sbin/ifconfig
3. All network adapters will be listed. If you only have one physical Ethernet adapter, it will be listed as Eth0. If you have more than one, the will be listed Eth0, Eth1, Eth2, etc.
4. Under the corresponding adapter look for:
   • HWaddr (ex: 00:12:AB:34:CD:56)
   • inet addr (ex 137.99.123.45)
   • Bcast (ex 137.99.123.255)
   • Mask (255.255.255.0)
